Safety helmets are the type of head protection equipment used to protect the head from a falling object or other hazardous accidents or damage in the industrial area. The other purpose of using safety helmet by the workers is identifying the group of people within the workspace area. It is most commonly used in various industries like construction, mining, forestry, manufacturing, etc. Usually, the outer shell of the helmet is made up of plastic or fiberglass. The colour signifies the type of profile or department the worker is designated for in the workplace. The most crucial purpose of designing the hard hat is to absorb the energy of impact when the massive object falls from a very high level over the outer shell of the helmet. It will not only help your workers from a head injury but also provide them with a differentiating visibility code.

Construction of safety helmet includes various accessories like:

  • A visor – It a portion meant for protecting the eyes against the sunlight, flying objects, sparks while welding process or bright light.
  • An extra-wide brim attachment – It is the additional shade-providing accessory.
  • Ear protectors – It is hearing protection that is fixed with the helmet to protect the worker’s ears against the loud noise or sound.
  • Mirrors – It is used to provide a spectacular reflection to increase the rear field of view.
  • Headlamp/Flashlight – It is a type of mounting device that is used to provide the light while working in the dark e.g., mining tasks. It will help the workers from working with full focus without holding the flashlight with the hands.
  • Chinstrap – It is the supporting accessory used to keep the helmet over the head without falling off the ground if the workers try to lean down.
  • Thick Insulating side pads – The primary purpose of having this element is to offer a warm around the sides of the head.

Safety helmet user’s checklist while choosing the option for industrial usage:

  • Match the option with the relevant industrial task to be performed. It means that if the worker is working with live electric connections, then it is suitable for him to use the electrical safety helmet.
  • Ensure if the safety helmet is free from damage such as cracks, scratches, or impact strikes.
  • Check whether the helmet is free from chemicals or solvent-based paint to avoid the effect on the quality parameter.
  • See to it that the helmet is stored correctly and in the dry storage space.
  • Always check the size so that you buy the right fit equipment to avoid the loosening or tightening of the helmet.
  • It is necessary to check the adjustability and durability of the safety helmet.
  • Select the appropriate colour suitable for your profile and department at the workplace.
  • Choose only from the ANSI approved standards.

There are two types of industrial safety helmets. Type 1 is for top protection. Type II is for lateral impact. Various kinds of the class include G for general, E for electrical and C for conductive. Thus, you should first study the working environment and then decide on the type and class of the safety helmet.
